How to Celebrate a Safe and Happy Festive Season With Your Pets

How to Celebrate a Safe and Happy Festive Season With Your Pets

Diwali is a time for lights, sweets, family, and celebrations. But while we enjoy the festive season, the noise, crowds, bright lights, and crackers can be overwhelming for our furry friends. Dogs and cats have much more sensitive hearing than we do, and sudden loud sounds can leave them anxious, frightened, or even disoriented.

This Diwali, let’s make room for our four-legged friends too. With a little preparation and care, we can celebrate while keeping our pets—and the animals around us—safe, comfortable, and happy.

Create a Comfort Zone at Home

Before the celebrations begin, set up a quiet, familiar space where your pet can retreat whenever things get too loud. It could be their favourite corner, a room away from windows, or a cosy space with their bed, blanket, toys, and some water.

Keep doors and windows securely closed when crackers are being burst outside. Drawing the curtains can also help reduce flashes of light.

Most importantly, let your pet choose when they want to hide or come out. Don't force them to interact with guests or bring them into a noisy environment. Their comfort zone should be a place where they feel completely safe.

Don’t Forget the Strays

Our neighbourhood dogs and cats don't have the luxury of a safe home to retreat to during Diwali. If you know of strays in your area, consider creating a temporary quiet, sheltered space for them.

A covered corner, cardboard box, or simple bedding placed away from busy roads and cracker-burning areas can make a huge difference. If possible, leave out fresh water and some food too.

A little kindness can go a long way for an animal that may be spending Diwali outdoors.

Be Extra Careful During Walks

Diwali walks require a little more planning. Avoid taking your dog out during peak cracker-bursting hours and stick to quieter routes whenever possible.

Before letting your dog sniff around or walk freely, check the road and sidewalks for leftover crackers, lit sparklers, wires, or other debris. Some crackers may look burnt out but can still be hot or dangerous.

And please keep your dog securely leashed. A sudden explosion can cause even the calmest dog to panic and run.

Consider Earmuffs for Dogs

If your dog is particularly sensitive to loud noises, dog-friendly earmuffs can be useful during walks or when stepping outside. They can help reduce the intensity of sudden sounds and make outdoor time less stressful.

Remember, earmuffs are an added layer of protection—not a reason to take your pet into an area where crackers are being burst.

Choose a Green, Pet-Friendly Diwali

The best way to make Diwali safer for animals is to celebrate thoughtfully. Consider choosing diyas, fairy lights, rangoli, family time, music at comfortable volumes, and eco-friendly decorations instead of noisy crackers.

If you do celebrate with crackers, be mindful of where and when you burst them, and keep them well away from animals, people, vehicles, and homes.

This Diwali, let's remember that a celebration doesn't have to be loud to be joyful.

For our pets, happiness may simply mean a familiar bed, a favourite toy, a quiet corner, a gentle cuddle, and knowing their humans are close by.

Let’s light up our homes without frightening the animals who share them with us. Have a safe, happy, and pet-friendly Diwali!
